Supply Chain
Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI)
What is vendor managed inventory (VMI)?
VMI is a supply chain practice where the supplier manages the buyer's inventory levels. The supplier monitors stock, forecasts demand, and initiates replenishment without purchase orders from the buyer. VMI reduces the bullwhip effect and improves service levels. In East African FMCG, VMI is emerging as manufacturers place field reps at key distribution points to manage stock for informal outlets.
